New Westminster is the oldest city in Western Canada with a long and rich history.   Andornot has been working with the City Archives for several years and is delighted that a search interface to selected archival records and photos is now available at http://archives.newwestcity.ca.  “This will be the first time in our city’s history that people with access to the Internet will be able to view our excellent photograph collection from either the comfort of their homes or any other location in the world,” says archivist Barry Dykes.  Read the complete press release here. Archives search results screenshot

Behind the scenes the Archives uses Inmagic DB/Text for SQL software plus a version of the Andornot Archives Starter Kit to manage their archival descriptions.  A subset of records in the database is then transferred to the public facing website outside the firewall.

“We enjoyed working with Andornot and are very pleased with the search interface they developed for us.  The advice and suggestions we received along the way were essential to the completion of this project. For instance, they encouraged us to incorporate some of the latest social bookmaking tools. “  [Barry Dykes]

BCLA2011

Our first conference of the season is just about finished – it’s always fun to meet so many clients and long time acquaintances.  I believe this is about our 14th or 15th year exhibiting at BCLA!  This time we committed to take our gadgets to the Technology Petting Zoo and Show & Tell.  Lots of debate over the relative merits of iPads versus Kindles, plus we showed off Jonathan’s super cool MacBook Air and Peter’s netbooks running Ubuntu Light and Jolicloud.

Next conference is the AABC conference at UBC in Vancouver on April 29th.  Check out our website  for the rest of our schedule this year.

Andornot has hosted the Northern Health (NH) Library catalogue and website on the internet for almost 10 years.  During this time it has undergone many iterations.  The most recent is one located at http://library.northernhealth.ca.

NHA Library Services website

Earlier this year a new design for the NH website was implemented using the DotNetNuke Content Management System (CMS).  So while Anne Allgaier, the librarian was considering how to deal with that change, she was concurrently being pressured to move the library presence off the internet and inside to the intranet.  The major concern being that the library services were meant for internal staff only. Anne knew however, that there were plenty of users who accessed her Inmagic-based catalogue and related information from their homes or from remote locations throughout the widely distributed region.  These users would be deprived of what had become a very popular service.  Anne asked Andornot to help her find a solution to keep the library presence on the internet and to incorporate the new website design and comments:

“Andornot’s has provided the Northern Health Library with exemplary service for the past decade, providing us with solutions that make it possible to provide the level of service that the library’s clientele requires, regardless of location.”

Website Template Linking

Andornot’s philosophy has always been that web-based databases should be integrated into the website template.  So while we worked with Anne to built up layers of content on the new site to go with the library catalogue, we also liaised with the NH website developers to implement a method that taps into the always-live site template on the NH server.  This was accomplished by having a content-free page on the home server within the NH’s CMS with a specific hidden comment tag in the content area (in this case, "<!—andornot -->").  This bit of text in the content area tells our system where to parse each page's content into the source site's template.

Library Portal

So while the template remains current on the hosted site, allowing users to quickly navigate to other areas of the NH website, the library content on the site continues to grow.  It includes:  NHAleftsideNav

  • the BC Ministry of Health News RSS feed
  • access to e-HLbc databases (requires IP authentication or username and password login)
  • access to thousands of online books (requires IP authentication or username and password login)
  • links to other library catalogues
  • Google Book Covers with links to Google Book Previews
  • Ordering cart
  • a canned search (one click) and an RSS feed for recent library acquisitions
  • links to various other services (Tutorials, InfoBriefs)
  • Patient information website links
  • Professional information website links

… thus providing NH staff, University of Northern BC medical faculty, and patients with a single access point for all sorts of resources, whether they are in the hospital, on campus, in their office, at home or on the road.

The Regional Centers for Healthy Communities (RCHC) are a group of six separate entities in Massachusetts, working in partnership to build and sustain healthy communities throughout RCHCWebLogo500 the state and the country.  Their services are many, including resource libraries in each location that provide free loans of current and culturally appropriate prevention resources including videos, curricula, books, and health data.

The union catalogue of all the resources is hosted by Andornot at http://rchc.andornot.comand is entirely web-based.  It has a public facing catalog database, including the ability to request items, plus behind the scenes loans and borrower databases.  RCHC staff can catalog books, add borrowers and process loans all through a secure login.  The databases are powered by Inmagic WebPublisher Pro and many of the Andornot scripts provide additional search and results display functionality, including Google book covers and previews

Under the guidance of RCHC director, Jim Ryan the site recently underwent a sharp new revamp, with a crisp clean look and logo. Also included are navigational links to all member websites, plus links to other Resources for Community Prevention Work.

dtSearchResults In addition, a powerful new aspect of the site features the dtSearch search engine which indexes 30 different websites including PDF and Word documents.  The search results are displayed below the search box with the first search hit highlighted in context.  Results are sorted by relevancy and the link to the specific material opens in a new window.  Users can search just the RCHC websites or the 27 other related websites or both in combination.  All websites searched are listed on a separate pagewith individual links to each site.

Jim Ryan and his team are excited about the new the feature on their site:

“Our dtSearch engine will be a great tool for our clients who need to find information that is critical to their programming.”

Andornot is a reseller and developer for the Windows based dtSearch product and encourages users to consider utilizing this powerful tool to rapidly search through thousands of pages of documents and websites (a dtSearch indexcan hold over a terabyte of text in up to 2 billion documents).  Contact us for more information about this tool or about the RCHC site.
